Richmond
Richmond is nine miles west-south-west from the centre of London. Also, it is one of two major towns, the other being Twickenham within the Borough of Richmond upon Thames.
Richmond lies opposite East Twickenham, and on the south side of the River Thames. However the town actually lies east of the river, which flows northwards then eastwards from Petersham to Kew.
Richmond has a large amount of attractive features, and often drawn in a numerous number of royalty, visitors and notable residents. These are some of the essential historic and natural features that make this small town more unique from almost all others within the capital: Richmond Palace, Richmond Park, Old Deer Park, Richmond Hill, The River Thames and Richmond Green.
Until about five centuries ago, Richmond was formerly part of Shene. Shene was not listed in the Doomsday Book, although it can be seen as its Saxon spelling (950AD) on the map, which reads as Sceon.
Henry VII had a palace built in Richmond after a fire, and he named it Richmond Palace in 1501, in acknowledgment of Richmond Castle in Yorkshire. As a result, a town developed nearby and took the same name as the palace, hence how Richmond came about. It is believed that Shakespeare may have performed some plays whilst in Richmond.
Nowadays, the town has a compact centre, largely focused on retail Businesses. Prices of goods tend to be more expensive with many designer-based stores as well as recognizable companies such as Marks & Spencer. Unlike its neighboring town, Kingston, Richmond has absolutely no indoor shopping centers and relies heavily on smaller stores, which makes it more appealing. Nevertheless, a side-effect of this is that the main streets are very often blocked with traffic.
Richmond is also recognized for its, secluded cafés, pubs, and its farmers market which happens every Saturday. Many traders come to sell their goods here, including dairy products, meat, baked foodstuff and vegetables.
